WHAT IS THE SERVANT LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE?
Purpose Statement: "Education and training in Christ-like character as applied to professional rescue ministry practices."
THE PROBLEM
For many years, rescue missions have occasionally attempted to hire the graduates from their long-term programs. The long-term program had prepared the client to live the Christian life. The client had the desire to “give back” and become involved in ministry. And the client's personal experience was extremely valuable in testifying to the power of God to work through rescue mission ministry.
But all too often, program graduates were ill-prepared for the intensity of rescue mission ministry that they soon found themselves in. It was one thing to receive the services of a rescue mission. It was quite another thing to be part of providing them.
Similarly, we've found that many people who apply for employment at rescue missions do not have either experience or training in the field, though they often have experience/training in a related field. After all, there are very few colleges, universities, or seminaries offering degrees in rescue ministry work.
OUR SOLUTION
Because of these situations, we have developed Servant Leadership Institute as a training opportunity for both rescue mission program graduates and employees of rescue missions. The Institute is open to both GRMF-member and non-member rescue missions.
The Institute is a one-year commitment, and students can apply at any time. The local rescue mission provides students with access to a webcam-connected computer for our weekly class. In the case of long-term program graduates, the mission often provides room & board as part of their own internship program. There is no additional expense for the mission to send one of its interns or employees through SLI. Our graduates are well-received in the Mission workforce.
INSTITUTE CLASSES
Live, online classes are currently held on Friday mornings (10:15-11:15am, central time) and cover a myriad of topics of importance in rescue mission ministry.
The students participate in interactive class discussions on the topic of the week. Guest speakers are included on occasion. There are regular reading assignments from the SLI textbook, Called to Serve (click here to see the table of contents). Our Friday morning classes coordinate with each chapter from the SLI textbook.

Each Mission provides a contact person (staff) who oversees student participate in their own mission.
